Despite the new architecture and art that humans have developed with the years, people still think of nature as the ultimate epitome of beauty. When we want to relax or retire, we don’t go to heavily urban areas; we go to places with tons of natural beauty, like beaches, mountains, lakes and forests. When we want to read, we will always prefer natural sunlight over artificial light.
In fact, now, more than ever, we’re trying to get back to nature, or at least have some contact with it, even if we live and work in places made of steel and stone with little to no vegetation around us.
One of the biggest problems about getting some vegetation around us is the lack of space. A large percentage of the population lives in apartments, where space is scarce and even a small garden is a luxury. Moreover, interiors rarely have direct sunlight, which is needed by plants to survive.
Shade loving perennials are a good option for these cases. If taken care of, shade loving perennials will last a very long time. Perennials, by definition, are plants that live a long time, although if you really want to get technical, a plant species has to have a lifespan of at least two years to qualify as a perennial. Shade loving perennials are such plants that in addition to living long, can survive without much sunlight. Basically, that means that they don’t need to be under direct sunlight, and in fact, some species of shade loving perennials will die if exposed to direct sunlight for a long time. Nevertheless, they need a bit of sunlight, and they need to be placed in rooms where they get indirect sunlight. If you place them in totally dark rooms or rooms that only get artificial light, they will die.
If you want a small plant or flower in a pot, for your desk at work, or for the dining table at home, then flowering shade loving perennials are good for you. As long as they’re watered, they will last for years, although you might need to cut part of it from once in a while.
Another good option for interiors is shrub shade loving perennials. These occupy much more space, and are better for big pots that are placed on hallways or in corners, where they can grow without bothering the people that come and go.
Finally, shade loving perennials tend to be inexpensive compared with other types of flowers. That’s because they aren’t as flashy as annual plants. However, shade loving perennials will outlive their annual cousins.
