When people hear the word think plants, they usually think beautiful flowers, or sturdy trees. It’s only natural to do so, as they are the plants that call our attention the most. However, people who work with plants and gardens know that there are other plants that are as important, but that usually go unnoticed. One of the most common types of plant that we never pay attention to unless we have to take care of it is grass. In a way, it’s funny that one of the most used and common types of plants passes unnoticed by most people.
As with any other plant, there are many types of grass. People who work in gardens and with cattle, know that they type of grass that they get is very important, not only for the looks, but also for its resistance to weather conditions and grazing. The level of maintenance needed is also important. When it comes to making a selection, most gardeners choose perennial ryegrass.
The perennial ryegrass, as its name suggest, is a type of grass. It belongs to the genus Lolium, and the family Poaceae. Its scientific name is Lolium Perenne. The perennial pyegrass is one of the most distributed types of grass in the world, sought both as forage and as pasture. Although it’s native to northern Africa and southern Europe, today they are grown all over the world, due to their high adaptability and resistance. The main reason for this is the perennial ryegrass’s resistant roots. The perennial ryegrass’s roots can withstand mild winters. And when spring comes back, the roots will make the grass grow again.
In addition, perennial ryegrass is very resistant to harsh treatment. For example, it can stand children, dogs, and sports activities, like football and the like, without much damage.
Another use of perennial ryegrass is as food for animals, like horses, cows, goats, rabbits and the like. It is specially good for substituting alfalfa and it lasts longer in storage. In addition, if planted, animals can just graze it and it’ll just grow back, provided the area where its planted is big enough so that animals can just move to graze elsewhere while a specific part grows back.
Finally, perennial ryegrass is used for soil conservation. Because it tends to extend fast, it covers a lot of ground in a relatively short amount of time, preventing the process of erosion from further damaging the ground. Because of this reason, the perennial ryegrass is often used in the restoration of damaged soils.
